Preparing the walkway

mapWith the direction and supervision of Alan Pollock, Certified Backyard Wildllife Habitat Steward and member of the Board of the Audubon Society,a plan for the garden was drawn. Then the soil was prepared without the use of chemicals or amendments. Finally plants were selected and planted.

preparation

site near streetBecause of the size of the area indicated in the plan, a portion of the walkway near the street, designed to highlight the church sign was prepared as a test garden. Soil was removed from the parkway and placed, sod side down, in the area in front of the sign.

mulchingMulch was applied over the bare soil in the parkway and the overturned sod in front of the sign. The parkway, freed of weeds by the removal of 3-4 inches of soil was planted immediately. The area in front of the sign was allowed to rest in mulch for 12 weeks before planting.
